2024 in Retrospect for Vapers Achievements

Happy Christmas and thank you for your support this year.

Here are our wins from 2024:

In February, international public health expert Clive Bates, warned the Irish Government that restricting flavoured vapes would set back tobacco control in Ireland.

In March, new Red C polling, found that 1 in 5 vapers would return to smoking if flavours were banned, and 50% of vapers would source vapes from unregulated sources.

In May, we welcomed the Irish Health Behaviour in School-aged Children (HBSC) Study 2022 report, which shows that fewer children are smoking.

In July, you contacted local election and MEP candidates to make sure they supported the role of flavoured vapes in helping us quit smoking.

In August, the report of the “Public Consultation on Further Regulation of Tobacco and Nicotine Inhaling Products,” which attracted 15,822 submissions was published.

It aimed to inform a second Government vaping bill, which will potentially ban flavours, packaging, advertising and disposable vapes.

Your contributions to the consultation highlighted why a flavour ban would be a bad decision for Ireland’s vapers and could drive people back to cigarettes.

In August, vapers called for shops to check IDs of all teens buying vapes, following a survey that found 65% of people believed teens were not asked for their IDs when purchasing vapes.

In October, you contacted your local TDs about the taxes on vapes and the proposed ban on flavoured vapes. This delivered a positive response from the Minister for Health who said: “I know people who have moved from cigarettes to vapes and I believe them when they say if vapes didn’t exist, they’d be smoking.”

In November, we urged election candidates to get the new Government to listen to the vapers who quit smoking and improve their health.

Happy New Year and continued campaign success.
