Taoiseach ‘Wrong on the Science’ Over Vape Ban Stance

Ireland’s Taoiseach Micheál Martin has come under fire after claiming vapes are “nearly worse than cigarettes” and signalling support for an outright ban — comments that directly contradict the latest independent medical evidence.

A landmark Cochrane review, published on 26 August, examined 80 studies involving nearly 30,000 adult smokers and found high-certainty evidence that nicotine vapes help more people quit smoking than traditional nicotine-replacement therapy (NRT) such as patches and gum. Participants using nicotine vapes were up to 67% more likely to quit successfully.

Dr. Delon Human of Smoke Free Sweden said the Taoiseach’s remarks risk “convincing smokers that switching away from cigarettes offers little or no health benefit — that is simply not what the evidence says.”

Cochrane is widely regarded as the gold standard for independent medical evidence.
